The Journey of Demetria Henderson
Demetria Henderson’s life story is marked by a journey of trauma and personal struggles. Demetria, a single mother, has faced numerous challenges since a young age. Growing up in a small Section 8 housing apartment in a neighborhood plagued by drug users, alcoholics, and gang violence, Demetria was raised by her great grandmother, the beautiful Dorothy R. Henderson. Demetria viewed her great grandmother as her mother, who instilled in her and her two brothers an abundance of love, protection, and deep-rooted values.
At the age of 16, Demetria walked alone to a clinic where she discovered she was pregnant. She informed the child’s father, who showed disinterest and made promises of moving to another college, leaving her with no support. Tragedy struck when, after sharing her pregnancy with her great grandmother, she passed away in April 2004, just four months before the birth of Demetria’s first child. At the tender age of 16, while pregnant, Demetria faced the heartbreak of losing the person she loved most and grappled with the abandonment from the father of her child.
In the years that followed, Demetria encountered a series of hardships including abuse, neglect, and financial struggles. Despite these adversities, she never gave up. Even in her moments of despair, the fear of failing her children became her driving force. With unwavering determination, she fought for stability, even when she had nothing and no one else to rely on.
In 2020, amid a global pandemic, Demetria’s life took a turn for the worse. She found herself on the verge of homelessness, without transportation, and battling postpartum depression. It was during this challenging period that she turned to prayer, seeking clarity and direction for her life’s purpose. Demetria realized that instead of viewing her life as a series of misfortunes, she could leverage her experiences and her unwavering determination to help other women. With her deep empathy and understanding of the struggles faced by women, with and without children, she envisioned a way to empower and provide financial stability to them. This epiphany gave birth to Women’s International Grail Inc. (W.I.G.), an organization dedicated to supporting women and children worldwide.
Demetria devised a strategic plan to combine resources and offer assistance to women in need. Every person she encountered along her journey contributed to the mission and purpose of W.I.G., shaping its core values and the people it serves.
Counseling played a crucial role in Demetria’s healing process. It enabled her to address her traumas in a different way, fostering personal growth not only for herself but also for the benefit of her children. By discovering her own strength and resilience, Demetria became an inspiration to other women, demonstrating that they too can overcome adversity and create a better future for themselves and their families. Through prayer and transparently sharing her own story, Demetria Henderson transformed her personal struggles into a powerful force for change. With Women’s International Grail Inc., she continues to make a profound difference in the lives of countless women, providing them with the necessary tools, support, and empowerment to thrive.
